Source: Chris Brown 'Knocked Around' Rihanna

New details have emerged about the midnight altercation between Chris Brown and Rihanna that led to Brown being booked on a felony criminal threat charge on Sunday.

"Chris knocked her around," a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE. "Black eye, blood, bruises. She had to be treated by a doctor."

A police source confirms to PEOPLE that the singer suffered a black eye as well as "a swollen split lip and two red and purple contusions on either side of her forehead."

The source, who described police photos of Rihanna, added, "She looked distraught and in a lot of pain. Her eyes were closed because she was looking down."

The Barbados-bred beauty, 20 – who is currently in "a safe place," says a friend – is cooperating with detectives, according to the Los Angeles Times. Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton has said he expects the case will be handed over to the district attorney's office on Tuesday or Wednesday. At that time, the prosecutors could charge Brown, 19, with more crimes.

The case could be affected by how much Rihanna is willing to forgive her boyfriend. "Prosecutors back off somewhat when they see a couple trying to work out their own issues," says Steve Sitkoff, an L.A. defense attorney. But, says the friend, "I would be so sad if she went back to him."

In the meantime, both stars have canceled upcoming appearances: The NBA has issued a statement that Brown will no longer participate in their All-Star Game events in Phoenix this weekend, while Rihanna backed out of a Friday night concert in Malaysia.

Friends Call Brown a Good Kid
News of the alleged assault stunned fans and friends alike. Brown, known for his charm and Michael Jackson-style moves, has always been seen as a good kid. "I've never known Chris to be combative," says his high school gym teacher from Tappahannock, Va., Lyn Amos. "He's always low-key, easygoing." Adds Jean Segar, a restaurant owner who has known Brown since he was a child: "He's such a mild-mannered person. It's hard for me to believe [the charge]."

What makes the allegations even more shocking is that Brown has claimed his mother was physically abused by his former stepfather. "He made me terrified all the time," Brown told Giant, adding, "I hate him to this day."

The abuse allegations could have a long-lasting impact on Brown's career. On Monday, Wrigley temporarily suspended his Doublemint commercials, and as an industry source points out, "A lot of his fans are women."

Is Benji Madden Katy Perry's New Valentine?

Earlier in the night she may have called it "the horror that is Valentine's Day," but Katy Perry appears to have been struck by cupid's arrow – which also seems to have hit Paris Hilton's ex, Benji Madden.

Following her Valentine's show at Hard Rock Hotel's Wasted Space, Perry, 24, and Madden, 29, headed to Lavo – where the two conspicuously cuddled throughout the night, later prompting one observer to sense "some chemistry there."

Madden, in town to deejay, even danced for Perry during several songs – and at those rare times when their hands weren't on each other's legs.

Obamas Head Home for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day not only provided sweet future memories for President and Michelle Obama, but also for Chicago's Table Fifty-Two chef and co-owner – with Julie Latsko – Art Smith.

"I was honored and humbled that President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama chose Table Fifty-Two as their Valentine's dinner retreat," Smith tells PEOPLE.

"I have cooked for many former presidents and Hollywood A-listers, and this was a milestone in my career – to serve my first acting President of the United States of America."

While Smith has cooked for the Obamas "many times" in the past, "having him on his first return to Chicago was awe-inspiring," the chef says.

A White House spokesman told PEOPLE that the first couple have "said they'll go home every six weeks or so just to keep everyone grounded and in touch with their friends."

When they entered the restaurant on Saturday night, the Obamas were applauded by the other guests – prompting Smith to blurt out, "Dinner and a show!"

As for the meal, "crispy catfish and our famous pistachio chicken were the fare of the evening, and I believe I saw a piece of our gooey crunchy pecan pie fly by," said Smith.

A Brazilian plastic surgeon has revealed details of the procedure that temporarily left Usher's wife, Tameka Raymond, in a medically-induced coma.

Two months after giving birth to the couple's second son, Raymond, 38, traveled to Brazil to have liposuction on her stomach, says Ellen Dasptry, a rep for Sao Paulo plastic surgeon Dr. Silvio Sterman, who was to have performed the surgery.

"Tameka Raymond came here on Friday to do a liposuction. Shortly after she went under [general] anesthesia, she suffered a cardiac arrest," Dasptry tells PEOPLE.

Induced Coma
Raymond never had the liposuction. According to Dasptry, after her cardiac arrest, Raymond was immediately revived and placed in an induced coma.

"When an attack like this happens, the doctors put the patient to sleep... and make sure that everything is okay and that there has not been any damage," explains Dasptry. "This is the protocol every time and this is what was done."

After a day in the ICU, Raymond was transferred to a larger facility, Sao Paulo's Hospital Sírio-Libanês, considered one of the finest in Brazil, says Dasptry. After nearly a week of recovery, she "is doing very well," says the surgeon's spokeswoman.

Usher Flies to Her Side
On Saturday, Usher canceled a performance at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy gala to fly to Brazil to be at his wife's side. Davis told partygoers the singer had to leave due to "serious injury in the family." Usher and Raymond have two sons: Usher Raymond V, 1, and Naveid Ely Raymond, who is two months old. Raymond also has three sons from a previous relationship.

On Feb. 8, Usher's rep Simone Smalls issued a statement on the star's behalf: "Tameka Raymond is in stable condition after suffering complications from routine surgery in Brazil. Her husband Usher is with her at the hospital. No further details will be released, and the family requests privacy at this difficult time."

Raymond's case has stirred debate within the medical world over whether a wait of two months between giving birth and undergoing liposuction is sufficiently long.

Surgery Too Soon?
According to New York City cosmetic surgeon and dermatologist Neil Sadick, "The general feeling is no abdominal surgery should be performed within eight weeks because of the distension and inflammation of the abdomen/uterus due to pregnancy. [Women] should wait at least three months postpartum before undergoing any type of procedures to the abdomen... They would need to get clearance from their OB/GYN and internist."

But Dasptry says Raymond met with her Brazilian surgeon Feb. 6 to undergo tests and was determined to be "in good health." "In plastic surgery all over the world, there is no rule that says a woman can't have plastic surgery performed two months after childbirth," says Dasptry.

A 'Saddened' Chris Brown Releases Statement

Brown, 19, allegedly attacked girlfriend Rihanna, 20, in Los Angeles on Feb. 8. He was arrested and may face charges from the district attorney.

Sarah Palin's 'Secret' Pregnancy – & How Family Found Out

A new biography of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin reveals that her secret pregnancy with son Trig was nearly uncovered when one of her daughters discovered Trig's prenatal ultrasound scan and confronted Palin with the picture.

"Sarah made one slip-up – but [she] dampened suspicion by explaining it away," reports Trailblazer: An Intimate Biography of Sarah Palin, by PEOPLE Assistant Editor Lorenzo Benet and being published Tuesday by Simon & Schuster's Threshold Editions.

Palin also was aware Trig had been diagnosed with Down syndrome but did not disclose this to her four other children until his Trig's birth last April 18, several weeks after she went public with her pregnancy.

"Not discussing the pregnancy with her daughters, she felt, would shorten the process and spare them from unwanted attention," according to the book, which was not authorized by Palin.

Trailblazer also reveals another reason Palin kept the pregnancy quiet. She tells Benet, who interviewed Palin and her family for a 2008 PEOPLE cover story: "Not knowing in my own heart if I was going to be ready to embrace a child with special needs – I couldn't talk about it."

In the course of preparing the book, Benet received the cooperation of Palin's parents, Chuck and Sally Heath; the governor's older sister, Heather Bruce; as well as in-laws, political allies and rivals.

Health Problems at Birth
The biography also reports that Trig's health was problematic from birth – he was born with a congenital heart defect typically found in half the babies with Down syndrome – but it cleared up on its own without surgery.

The Palin home is portrayed as running at a frenetic pace; one-on-one basketball games, take-out pizza dinners, razzing between kids and parents.

Extended family is in abundance, and while they have helped Sarah and Todd Palin raise their children – enabling her to serve as governor and pursue her political career last fall during the presidential campaign – the couple hired a Wasilla nanny to help out at home, the book reveals.

Bristol and Levi
Trailblazer also sheds new light on the relationship between Palin's eldest daughter, Bristol, and her fiancé, Levi Johnston, the father of Bristol's son, Tripp, born Dec. 27, 2008.

While Bristol was pregnant last year, she was living in Anchorage with her aunt and uncle, Heather and Kurt Bruce, and working at two espresso shops – while also attending West High School. Levi was 40 miles away in Wasilla, but, "there was certainly no ban on them dating," reports Trailblazer. "Levi used to drive to Anchorage to take Bristol out."

Heather Bruce is quoted as saying in the book, "He used to bring her flowers and take her to dinner and a movie. He would come in and say hello, but he says few words. He's a quiet boy."

Palin, who became an overnight sensation once John McCain tapped her to become his running mate, can fall victim to being star-struck. She once told husband Todd she was going shopping at Costco in Anchorage but detoured to J.C. Penney's to meet Ivana Trump – in town to promote a cosmetics line.

Salma Hayek Marries French Billionaire

Salma Hayek has married French businessman Francois-Henri Pinault, Monday's online edition of the weekly French newsmagazine Le Point reports.

Hayek, 42, and Pinault, 46, were married on Saturday – St. Valentine's Day – in the City Hall of the Sixth Arrondissement in central Paris, according to the publication, which is owned by the Pinault family.

Sixth Arrondissement Mayor Jean-Pierre Lecoq subsequently confirmed the report to the French news agency Agence France-Presse.

There had been recent reports that the couple – whose daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, was born in Los Angeles in September 2007 – had reunited after they had called off their marital engagement in July 2008.

The two had originally announced their engagement in March 2007.

Romance Rekindled
Friends of the couple tell PEOPLE that a Paris trip in September (when Hayek attended the Balenciaga fashion show) and another in November helped rekindle the pair's relationship. Adds a source, they were "very evidently in love with each other, very affectionate in public" together at the Dubai Film Festival in December.

Only last week, Hayek, who's been appearing on NBC's 30 Rock, told TV host Rachael Ray that when she kisses Alec Baldwin on the show, "I keep telling Francois, 'I imagine I was kissing you.' "

Pinault is CEO of the luxury giant PPR and the son of one of France's richest men, Francois Pinault, whose fortune last year was estimated to be $16.9 billion by Forbes magazine.

Besides his daughter with Hayek, Pinaut also has two children from a previous marriage.

Oscar voting rules create uneven playing field

Rick Rosas, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers and one of two accountants charged with tabulating the results, says there are years when just a few votes separate the winner from the losers.

"We have had exceedingly close (results), extremely close," he acknowledges. "This is my eighth year, and I definitely recall having to recount a couple of times for best picture."

The Academy uses two very different voting procedures to determine the nominees for best picture and the actual winner. It operates a whole other voting system in the foreign language race.

For best picture, since 1936 the Academy has favored what it calls "preferential" voting, a variant on the well-established Single Transferable Vote system.

The way this works, members (and all Academy members are eligible to nominate best picture contenders) choose five movies that they rank in order of preference. For a movie to get nominated, it must be ranked No. 1 by a fifth of the voters.

But what frequently happens is that only two or three movies cross that threshold. In this case, the Academy takes the movie with the lowest number of No. 1 votes and reallocates those votes to the No. 2 choices on the ballots.

Let's say a voter names "The Day the Earth Stood Still" as his first choice for best picture, but nobody else does. Let's also say he opts for "Slumdog Millionaire" as his second choice. His vote would be transferred from "Earth" to "Slumdog."

The process continues, eliminating from the bottom up, until five pictures have crossed the one-fifth threshold.

When members vote for the winner, however, a different system applies. At that stage it becomes a simple matter of first-past-the-post. So in theory, if four of this year's best picture nominees get just under 20% of the vote, and "Slumdog" gets just over 20%, it will win the Oscar. A plurality, not a majority, wins.

"With five nominees, in a significant number of cases, the Oscar recipient may have less than 50% of the vote -- they never tell us," says the Academy's executive director, Bruce Davis, referring to Pricewaterhouse-Coopers. "Theoretically, in a really tight race, you could win it with 21% of the vote."

Why should we care? The answer is that each system favors a different kind of movie.

For the nomination stage, it doesn't matter if some people are passionate about your movie, even if they constitute almost 20% of the voters; what matters is that enough other people like it so much they are willing to rank it No. 2. So a picture like "The Wrestler," which has a coterie of ardent fans but which also polarized audiences, might have had a significant number of people who made it their first choice, but not enough second-place votes to end up with a nomination.

By contrast, a widely respected picture like "The Reader" might have been fewer voters' first choice, but it could have ended up with so many second or third-place nods that it was nominated.

This could be one reason "The Dark Knight" failed to get nominated, an oversight that several insiders believe will have a serious effect on the Oscarcast's declining ratings. Many of the Academy's younger members might have made it their first choice, but not enough to cross the 20% threshold. Then too few older members placed it second on their ballots.

If this nominating system favors generally acceptable films over ones that are adored by a passionate minority, by contrast, the method for choosing the winner benefits one film with the most intense support. So if more people are truly passionate about "Benjamin Button" than, say, "Frost/Nixon," it will win the Oscar -- regardless of the fact that "Frost/Nixon" might draw more second-place votes.

Who has the write stuff for an Oscar

No matter. On to the 10 original and adapted screenplay nominees vying for the gold at the 81st annual Academy Awards on Sunday.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

"WALL-E" by Andrew Stanton, Jim Reardon; story by Stanton and Pete Docter.

Stanton, who also directed, is a maverick in the screenwriting community for elevating animation, a medium that rarely gets the respect it deserves. Voters might reward Stanton and Reardon for composing the most believable and entertaining romance of the year despite having primarily bleeps and whirs for dialogue. Then again, it is animation, and while scripts for "Ratatouille," "The Incredibles" and "Finding Nemo" (also co-written by Stanton) were nominated in the past few years, they all walked away empty-handed.

"IN BRUGES" by Martin McDonagh

McDonagh's script is packed with the kind of dialogue actors love to say and writers love to provide. Despite its moderate box office earnings, the film racked up a Golden Globe win for actor Colin Farrell. "In Bruges" could be just the oddball favorite to sneak in and pinch the gold.

"MILK" by Dustin Lance Black

Black's deeply researched treatment is the young "Big Love" writer's first major produced screenplay, which worked wonders for Alan Ball ("American Beauty"), Diablo Cody ("Juno") and Michael Arndt ("Little Miss Sunshine"), who all walked away with the statuette. It was honored by the Writers Guild of America, but might not be funky enough for voters who like to reward idiosyncrasy in the original category ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Talk to Her," "Gosford Park").

"HAPPY-GO-LUCKY" by Mike Leigh

Leigh has been up for three previous writing Oscars ("Vera Drake," "Topsy-Turvy," "Secrets & Lies") without a win. Voters love his storytelling because it's true-to-life, yet he remains a long shot precisely because of the way he arrives at that naturalism, often in lengthy improvisational workshops with his actors.

"FROZEN RIVER" by Courtney Hunt

A festival favorite that earned the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance last year, "Frozen River" is a dark horse in the screenplay race because most voters have probably not seen the film. Then again, the fact that it was included over such favorites as "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and Robert D. Siegel's "The Wrestler" bodes well.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

"SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE" by Simon Beaufoy

Beaufoy has already been honored by the Golden Globes and Writers Guild of America. Oscar voters love quirky, feel-good scripts, even if it's less weighty than other contenders -- witness past winners "Juno," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Lost in Translation."

"THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON" by Eric Roth; story by Roth and Robin Swicord

Roth won for "Forrest Gump," received two other nominations ("Munich," "The Insider") and is one of the most respected scripters in the business. Despite its profundity, the film's emotional coolness -- amplified by director David Fincher's devotion to technical advancements -- might take something away for voters looking to reward vitality. (See "Slumdog.")

"FROST/NIXON" by Peter Morgan

Morgan gets tremendous respect for making a popular play out of a footnote in political history -- and then doing it again with an engaging film. But given the story's staid conventions, David Frost and Richard Nixon might not quite have the sass of the street kids from Mumbai.

"DOUBT" by John Patrick Shanley

As director of his own script, which he adapted from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Shanley managed to get a core of great thespians, with all four leads scoring nominations. But, while the story has contemporary relevance, it's the type of writing that gets wonderful recognition as a theater piece, and mainly just admiration when translated to film.

"THE READER" by David Hare

Hare was nominated in 2003 for his adaptation of Michael Cunningham's "The Hours," another award-winning historical novel, but this type of material gets overlooked ("Atonement," "Little Children") as often as it's chosen ("Brokeback Mountain," "Sideways"). The most telling signpost is that Hare's script wasn't nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award (the Nolan brothers' "Dark Knight" script was), thus making its Oscar chances extremely slim.

Benjamin Button stays on top overseas

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Lavished with 13 Oscar nominations, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" showing considerable strength at the foreign box office on Sunday, logging a second consecutive weekend at No. 1.

The Brad Pitt drama earned an estimated $31 million from 53 markets, taking its foreign tally to $118.6 million. In North America, it has earned about $122 million, but has largely run out of steam a week before the Oscars are handed out.

The film enjoyed first-place debuts in Italy ($4.6 million), South Korea ($2 million) and Taiwan ($1 million).

A No. 1 Paris finish portends a French tally of $4.6 million in its second weekend, and in Spain it held on to the No. 1 spot with $3.3 million, also in its second weekend. A first-place finish in Japan ($3.1 million) and a muscular holdover in the U.K. ($2.6 million) helped the weekend tally.

With its Oscar nomination in the animated film category, Disney's "Bolt' has been showing real spunk internationally, finishing second and pushing its overseas total to $131.8 million thanks to a $16.5 million weekend from 38 territories. A strong U.K. bow ($7.8 million) helped as did solid bows in Holland and Belgium.

Other key Oscar bidders are doing nowhere near as well. "Milk" has earned $7.5 million to date; "Frost/Nixon" $6.4 million; "Doubt" $10.3 million; and "Revolutionary Road" $43 million.

Finishing No. 3 overall was "Valkyrie," which expanded its run to include 18 markets in Latin America, southeast Asia and parts of eastern Europe. The weekend tally was $11.9 million from 55 markets, for an international total of $72 million. The Tom Cruise drama opened at No. 1 in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Mexico.

"He's Just Not That Into You," at No. 4, broadened its overseas run to 16 markets for a weekend estimate of $11.4 million. The comedy opened at No. 1 in Australia with $3.8 million. Its foreign total stands at $16.5 million.

New North American champ "Friday the 13th" slashed its way to $10.4 million from 30 markets. Top tallies included Britain with $2 million and Russia with $1.7 million.

Two other North American debutants also appeared on the international stage: "Confessions of a Shopaholic" earned $2.8 million from five overseas markets. "The International" pulled in $2.7 million from three markets including Germany, where the Clive Owen espionage thriller played the just-ended Berlin International Film Festival.

Beckham: It would be difficult to return to Galaxy

MILAN (Reuters) – David Beckham said on Sunday it would be difficult for him to return to Los Angeles Galaxy if his permanent move to AC Milan does not materialize.

The England midfielder, on a two-month loan at Milan, wants to stay in Italy but Galaxy said on Friday that he must go back to Los Angeles after a Major League Soccer deadline to complete the transfer passed.

"I've said I want to stay here and if I do go back then it will be a bit difficult but we'll have to wait and see what happens," Beckham told reporters after his side's 2-1 defeat by Inter Milan.

Milan have said they still hope to sign the 33-year-old full-time irrespective of the MLS deadline.

Asked if there might be an outcome in the next few days, Beckham said: "I don't know. It is out of my hands and they'll be talking in the next week or two."

British singer M.I.A. gives birth to boy

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – British pop singer M.I.A., who performed at the Grammy Awards last Sunday despite experiencing labor contractions, has given birth to a baby boy, she said on her MySpace page.

The unnamed baby was born on Wednesday, and is "healthy, fine, beautiful and the most amazing thing ever on this planet," according to her Web posting on Saturday.

The baby's father is musician Benjamin Brewer, son of Canadian liquor scion Edgar Bronfman, chairman and CEO of Warner Music Group. The location was not disclosed.

M.I.A., 31, whose real name is Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, was born in Britain but raised in Sri Lanka, where her father agitated for an independent Tamil state. She achieved fame with her second album "Kala," a cross-cultural mishmash of beats, slogans and lyrical drama. Her ubiquitous single "Paper Plane," which incorporates elements of an obscure Clash track, received a Grammy nomination for record of the year.

Singer Chris Brown sorry and saddened

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – R&B singer-songwriter Chris Brown, arrested last week for alleged domestic violence, said Sunday he was "sorry and saddened" by the events and was seeking the counseling of his pastor, family and friends.

Brown, 19, surrendered to police on February 8 after allegedly beating his girlfriend, Barbados-born pop singer Rihanna. Both singers abruptly pulled out of scheduled performances at the Grammys that night. Brown was released on bail.

Rihanna, 20, later went to Barbados with her face marked with bloody wounds and bruises, according to media reports.

"Until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writings under my name are frauds," Brown said.

Paris Hilton: What Did Doug Reinhardt Give Her?

Hilton and Reinhardt did spend a lot of time together this weekend, according to sources.

I just got word that the hotel heiress and the young man best known for appearing on The Hills were with each other on Valentine's Day.

Reinhardt even gave her a present for V-Day.

So what does a man get the gal who already has everything?

Sources reveal that Reinhardt gave Hilton a print of an Andy Warhol piece depicting Marilyn Monroe.

Hilton's grandmother called her Marilyn Monroe when the celebutante was a child. Plus, Hilton has even compared herself to the Hollywood legend. "There's nobody in the world like me," Hilton once said. "I think every decade has an iconic blonde, like Marilyn Monroe or Princess Diana and, right now, I'm that icon."

Reinhardt was also by Hilton's side the night before Valentine's Day when she threw herself a pink-themed party at her L.A.-area house for her 28th birthday.

The question still remains if Hilton and Reinhardt are an actual couple. Sources say that their relationship right now is simply about "hooking up" on a regular basis.

"She's not serious right now with anyone," one source said.

Reps for Hilton and Reinhardt declined to comment.
